INCIDENTS

96-668 - Adams NHS (Massachusetts) - Follow-up on Burglary

The remaining two books of the four stolen from the park's library on
November 11, 1996 have been recovered. The books are damp and appear to be
damaged. On April 24th, members of the park's staff and document
conservation specialists examined all four of the books to determine possible
treatments. The books will probably remain under FBI custody until the case
is closed. [Marianne Peak, Superintendent, ADAM, 5/20]

97-205 - Denali NP (Alaska) - Train Derailment; Evacuation

On Sunday, May 18th, the McKinley Explorer, a southbound Alaska Railroad
passenger train, derailed on a remote section of track 15 miles south of the
Denali depot. An engine and eight passenger cars were involved. Over 400
passengers were evacuated from the train in a multi-agency mutual aid
response. EMS crews handled two cardiac cases, a pregnancy complication, and
two orthopedic patients. Access to the site was by airboat on the Nenana
River and by helicopter, an ATV and high-rail vehicles. District ranger Tom
Habecker coordinated the park's response with local EMS and fire agencies,
railroad personnel and state troopers. Twenty persons from Denali responded
to the incident. The main railroad line will remain closed until repairs can
be made. In the interim, passengers are being bussed to the park. [Tom
Habecker, DR, DENA, 5/19]

97-206 - Santa Monica Mountains NRA (California) - EMS Response; Life Saved

On May 18th, 79-year-old fiddle player S.G. became ill while
performing in 85 degree heat at the Topanga banjo fiddle contest, an annual
event at Paramount Ranch that attracts over 4,000 visitors. S.G. sat
down across from the event's first aid station and fell unconscious. A Red
Cross volunteer EMT immediately came to his assistance; rangers Greg Jackson,
Glen Douglas, and Kathy Krisko also responded and found that S.G. was in
full arrest. CPR was begun and county paramedics were dispatched. S.G.
was defibrillated twice, then taken to a hospital in Los Robles, where he
arrived with a normal heart rhythm and was admitted to CCU. Ranger Ho Truong
was the NPS liaison for the event. [Jon Dick, CR, SAMO, 5/19]

97-207 - Roosevelt-Vanderbilt NHS (New York) - Special Event

Prince Andrew, Duke of York, visited the park on May 19th to commemorate the
journey of his grandparents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, to the
Roosevelt home in 1939. Mrs. Tobie Roosevelt, the wife of the president's
son, was on hand to greet the prince and joined the interpretive tour.
Prince Andrew placed a wreath of white roses at the Roosevelt grave site
before departing. [Christopher Jefferson, CR, ROVA, 5/19]

97-208 - Great Smoky Mountains NP (Tennessee) - MVA with Fatality

Rangers Jerry Grubb and Julie Parrish responded to a report of a single
vehicle roll-over accident on the northbound spur of U.S. 441 on the evening
of May 20th. Two local men, both passengers in the vehicle, were seriously
injured. One of the two died after being airlifted to the hospital at the
University of Tennessee. The driver has been arrested and is facing a
variety of charges. Alcohol was involved. [Jason Houck, CR, GRSM, 5/21]

97-209 - Little River Canyon (Alabama) - Drug Arrest

On May 8th, G.M., 23, of Fort Payne, Alabama, was arrested for
possession of three ounces of marijuana which had been packaged in smaller
bags for resale. G.M. also had over $2,500 in pre-paid long distance
phone call cards in his possession. A check of the cards revealed that some
may be stolen and others may be fraudulent. The Secret Service is assisting
in the investigation of the phone cards. [Dwight Dixon, CR, LIRI, 5/19]
