INCIDENTS

97-271 - Cumberland Gap NHP (KY/TN/VA) - Storm Impacts

High winds, rain, lightning and hail associated with a severe storm cell
which passed through the area on June 13th caused severe damage to trees in
the park's campground and along some roadways. Tornados were also seen in
the vicinity, including one which touched down 13 miles north of the park,
but none struck the park itself. The power was knocked out at several
locations, including the visitor center. The worst damage occurred at the
campground, but there were no injuries. Several rangers and maintenance
employees reported in that evening to clean up the area; work continued the
following day and was still underway at the time of the report. Power was
restored to the visitor center late on the 14th. [Elizabeth Dinger-Glisan,
CUGA, 6/17]

97-272 - Glen Canyon NRA (AZ/UT) - Drowning

S.B.K., 18, a Korean national, drowned while swimming at Hite just
before 8 p.m. on June 12th. A friend reported seeing S.B.K. struggle, then
disappear under the lake's surface. Rangers were on scene within 15 minutes
and began a search of the area by vessel. Park divers were brought in from
other areas of the park, but were not able to arrive on scene within the time
frame needed to make a rescue. Due to darkness and adverse water conditions,
dive recovery operations were delayed until the following morning. S.B.K.'s
body was recovered by the dive team in about 12 feet of water at 9 a.m.
[Kerry Haut, Hite SDR, GLCA, 6/17]

97-273 - Agate Fossil Beds NM (NE) - Special Event

On June 14th, the park celebrated the grand opening of its visitor center and
museum exhibits and its formal establishment. Over 750 visitors to the
celebration, which included a formal morning ceremony, afternoon
performances, and a variety of exhibits and craft sales, all under a big-top
tent. Speakers included the regional director, lieutenant governor,
representatives from the state's congressional delegation, and members of the
park's friends group, the Lakota Oglala tribe, the professional paleontology
community, and the Cook family, whose donated Lakota collections are a major
exhibit at the park. Assisting the park were rangers from Scotts Bluff, Fort
Laramie and Badlands, as well as county and state officers. [Ruthann
Knudson, Unit Manager, AGFO, 6/17]

97-274 - Everglades NP (FL) - Special Event

Vice president Al Gore visited the park on June 17th to announce a $25
million federal grant for land acquisition as part of the continuing federal-
state partnership for the restoration of the Everglades. The park's incident
management team managed the event. The vice president took an interpretive
walk, guided by ranger Toni Dufficy. The announcement itself was made on the
back deck of the Coe visitor center. About 150 invited guests attended the
ceremony. [Roberta D'Amico, IO, EVER, 6/17]

OPERATIONAL NOTES

FLETC Achievements - Members of LMTP-703, the basic land management law
enforcement training course, graduated on May 21st. This was an exceptional
class, with 18 of the 23 graduates recognized at graduation for outstanding
achievements and awards. Overall, the class probably broke or set more
records than any class in FLETC's history:

o Michael Archer, Kathy Hance, Tara Ross and Eric Candelario all scored
perfect scores (500 points) in the physical efficiency battery of
tests; Candelario scored three consecutive 500s. Thirteen members of
the class scored 75% or better on the final PEB test.
o Jodi Towery set a new FLETC record by bench-pressing 156% of her body
weight (she weighs 116 pounds and pressed 185 pounds).
o Rom Malamphy was the first ranger to shoot a 300 point perfect score
since 1993. Eleven members of the class shot an 85% or higher on the
PPC.
o Michael Archer had an overall academic average of 99.14 on all written
tests and graded practical exercises. Six members of the class scored
95% or better on all written tests.

These records and accomplishments are no small feat, considering that FLETC
graduates about 20,000 students per year and has been keeping records for 26
years. [Paul Henry, Superintendent, NPS/FLETC]
