INCIDENTS

97-275 - Badlands NP (SD) - Rescue

Early on the evening of June 8th, J.T., 46, of Manderson, South
Dakota, was exploring Sheep Mountain Table with his family when the rock he
was standing on at the edge of a cliff gave way and he fell about 50 feet,
then rolled another 100 feet on rock scree. Rangers Glen Livermont, Gerald
Roy and Dave Vasarhelyi and members of a local SAR team responded and
evacuated J.T. to a hospital in Rapid City, where he is listed in serious
condition. Alcohol was a contributing factor. [Marianne Mills, PIO, BADL,
6/18]

97-276 - Badlands NP (SD) - Tornado

A tornado touched down in the park between the Door Trail parking lot and Big
Badlands overlook at 6:45 p.m. on June 7th. A twin tornado was seen in the
air not far from the park housing area at the same time. This weather
anomaly, called "sisters" by meteorologists, did not touch down. No damage
to facilities or features has been discovered. [Marianne Mills, PIO, BADL,
6/18]

97-277 - George Washington Memorial Parkway (VA) - MVA with Fatality

During the early morning hours of June 18th, A.K., 19, of Washington,
DC, was killed when she apparently lost control of her car while on the
parkway near Lady Bird Johnson Park and it plunged into the Potomac River. A
witness told police that A.K. was traveling north on the parkway in her Jeep
Cherokee when it jumped the curb and went into the river. The vehicle and
victim were recovered. The investigation continues. [Bill Lynch, RLES,
NCRO, 6/19]

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Bryce Canyon NP (UT) - Condor Sightings

On June 17th and 18th, five condors were sighted at the south end of the
park. The birds perched on an overlook, and part employees were able to get
close enough to read the numbers on the wing tags. This is the first
sighting of the birds, which were released in the Arizona strip. The condors
were being harassed by peregrine falcons. USFWS has been advised of the
sighting. [Richard Bryant, CRM, BRCA]
