INCIDENTS

97-680 - Western Pacific Areas - Follow-up on Super Typhoon Keith

Super typhoon Keith passed over the island of Rota (65 miles north of Guam
and 60 miles south of Saipan) at 4 p.m. on November 2nd with sustained winds
of 190 mph and gusts to 230 mph. Both War in the Pacific NHP and American
Memorial Park experienced sustained winds in excess of 100 mph (with gusts
much higher) and torrential rains. War in the Pacific suffered only minor
vegetation damage and lost electrical power late in the day. The visitor
center reopened on emergency generator power yesterday morning; operations
will return to normal when municipal power is restored sometime during the
next several days. Park units are open for visitation while cleanup takes
place. American Memorial Park suffered major vegetation damage and flooding
and most of the restorations completed last week following the earlier
passage of super typhoon Joan were destroyed and will need to be redone.
Minor damage was inflicted on the stage building and amphitheater and some
damage was recorded at the Court of Honor. Electrical power has not been
restored and all facilities remain closed. Visitors are allowed along the
beaches, but most roads and trails are blocked by downed trees. It will take
at least three days to clear debris from the roads and open a majority of the
park. A crew has been dispatched from WAPA to assist with the cleanup. [Ed
Wood, Superintendent, WAPA/AMME, 11/3]

97-685 - Indiana Dunes NL (IN) - Death of Employee

Facilities management specialist Keith Weiser, 50, died unexpectedly on
October 31st. He is survived by his wife, M., son, B., and Daughter,
J. Visitation will be tomorrow at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 605 Lyon
Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50309, with cremation to follow. No additional
details are yet available. [Debbie Hall, INDU, 11/3]

97-686 - Independence NHP (PA) - Special Event

President Jiang Zemin of the People's Republic of China visited the park on
Thursday, October 30th, and toured the assembly room and court room in
Independence Hall. The visit attracted extensive coverage by local, national
and international news media. There were two permitted demonstrations with
several hundred demonstrators. Independence law enforcement rangers worked
with city police, Secret Service agents and State Department officials on
security arrangements for the visit. [Phil Sheridan, INDE, 11/3]

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Mojave NP (CA) - Feral Burro Roundup

The park recently completed feral burro trapping operations in which a total
of 600 burros were removed from park lands. One-way trigger gates contained
burros within existing livestock corrals where the animals regularly come to
drink from water troughs. The burros were transported to the BLM horse and
burro adoption facility in Ridgecrest, California, where they were examined,
vaccinated and freeze-branded before being put up for adoption. A census
conducted in 1996 estimated that there were 1,400 burros within the park.
Although 600 burros were removed, the projected 17% annual population growth
means that there are still about 1,050 remaining in the park. The target
population is 150 animals. Trapping operations will resume in late summer,
1998. The trapping this year was done by local cowboys. [Chris Stubbs, RMS,
MOJA]

OPERATIONAL NOTES

Weapons Cleaning Products - The armed forces recently conducted extensive
tests on a number of environmentally compliant weapons cleaning products to
determine if highly toxic products currently in use could be replaced by low
toxicity alternates. Three were found which rated excellent, with over 95%
of cleaned weapons passing inspection by the unit armorer on the first pass.
They are IT-48W (NSN 6850-01-397-2539), SKYSOL (NSN 6850-01-381-4420), and
BREAKTHROUGH (NSN 6850-01-378-0679). Parks interested in obtaining more
information on these products should contact the Defense Logistics Agency's
Defense Supply Center (DSCR) in Richmond, Virginia, at 1-800-345-6333.
Additional product information and on-line ordering may be obtained via
DSCR's web site: www.dscr.dla.mil. For further information on
environmentally friendly products, contact Hank Brightman at NP-WASO-FMD or
at 202-565-1259. [Hank Brightman, FMD/WASO]

Leadership Awards - A call for nominations has been made for the 1998
national park partnership leadership awards. The awards, jointly given by
the NPS and National Park Foundation, honor outstanding partnerships which
further the mission of the NPS. The awards honor excellence in the following
five categories:

     o resource stewardship and partnership;
     o education and interpretation;
     o management support;
o protection and visitor services; and
     o "beyond park boundaries."

The 1998 winners will be honored during National Park Week next April. Each
regional and associate director has been asked to forward no more than two
nominees in each category. Questions or requests for additional information
should be directed to Sue Waldron at NP-WASO-MIB (202-208-5477) or Kelly
Jones at NP-NPS (202-530-1463). [Sue Waldron, Partnership Office, WASO]
