INCIDENTS

97-710 - Sagamore Hill NHS (NY) - Death of Employee

Interpretive ranger Patricia "Toby" Kennedy, 67, who had worked for the park
and the NPS for the past 19 years, died on November 16th following a short
illness. A native of Iowa and long-time resident of Oyster Bay, New York,
she was an important tie linking the park, the community and the Oyster Bay
branch of the Roosevelt family. As a special event planner, Toby was often
able to get disparate groups and people - classical string quartets,
delicatessens, clowns and fashionable Manhattan Fifth Avenue department
stores - to donate time and resources to produce community events such as
"Neighborhood Night" and "Ice Tea Sunday" in the park. Her last grand effort
was the Theodore Roosevelt birthday art contest for 140 fourth graders, which
she successfully organized while ill and at home. Her grand style and
delightful sense of humor were exemplified in many ways - championing
charitable causes, providing tours of the Roosevelt home to dignitaries,
inspiring countless school children about the life and accomplishments of
Theodore Roosevelt, attempting to sell president Clinton her winter ranger
hat at the opening of the 1998 New York Metropolitan Opera season. A
memorial service is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal
Church, 61 East Main Street, Oyster Bay. The family has requested that
donations in lieu of flowers be made to a New York City homeless assistance
program: Hope for the Future, 131 Verdi Street, Farmingdale, NY 11735 (516-
752-5771). She is survived by her husband, three daughters and five
grandchildren. Condolences may be sent to the park at 20 Sagamore Hill,
Oyster Bay, NY 11771 or sent via cc:Mail to Mike Shaver at NP--NAR. [Mike
Shaver, PR, IVS, SAHI, 11/20]

97-711 - Coronado NM (AZ) - Drug Seizure and Arrest

Rangers William Smith and Ken Thompson stopped a white Chevrolet pickup
traveling eastbound at excessive speed on the Montezuma Canyon road at 7:30
a.m. on November 19th. The driver of the vehicle, E.M., 41, consented
to a search of the rear of the pickup. The two rangers, with the assistance
of special agent Dan Wirth, discovered just over 542 pounds of marijuana in
the truck's bed, partially covered by carpeting and clothing. E.M. was
arrested and the marijuana was turned over to Customs agents. [Ken Thompson,
PR, CORO, 11/19]
