RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Knife River Indian Villages NHS (ND) - Whooping Crane Migration

Eight whooping cranes were spotted flying over the park last week and
reported to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). Whooping cranes are a
federally-listed endangered species, with fewer than 200 individuals in the
wild. The cranes were making their annual migration from their wintering
grounds in Aransas NWR in Texas to their breeding grounds in Wood Buffalo NP
in Canada's Northwest Territories. The whooping cranes were flying with
flocks of sandhill cranes at an altitude of about 1,000 feet and were
following the Missouri River. FWS employs confirmed sightings to help track
the path of the whooping crane migration. [Bill Lutz, KNRI, 4/15]
