INCIDENTS

98-145 - Delaware Water Gap NRA (NJ/PA) - Accidental Shooting

E.S., 48, of Clifton, New Jersey, was shot while turkey hunting in the
Pompey Ridge area of the park around 11 a.m. on Monday, April 20th. E.S.
was struck by 13 #6 birdshot pellets fired by Angel Santana, 34, of Newark,
New Jersey, and received wounds to his right hand, right leg, abdomen, and
chest. Santana was about 175 feet from E.S. when the accident occurred.
E.S. was treated by rangers on site, then transported by ambulance to a
nearby helispot, where he was airlifted by a state police helicopter to
Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was released later that night. The
incident is being investigated by rangers and by New Jersey Division of Fish,
Game, and Wildlife wardens. [Doyle Nelson, CR, DEWA, 4/20]

98-146 - Grand Canyon NP (AZ) - Falling Fatality

On the afternoon of April 13th, visitors reported seeing what they believed
to be a human body in the canyon behind the El Tovar Hotel. Rangers
investigated and found the body approximately 400 feet below the rim. It
appears that the victim, a man about 30 years old, fell from the rim and had
been there for some time. His body was partially frozen into a snow bank,
and may have only recently been exposed by melting snow. The victim has not
yet been identified and the investigation is continuing. [David Brennan, DR,
South Rim, GRCA, 4/20]

98-147 - Great Smoky Mountains NP (NC/TN) - Drowning; Searches

Rangers found the body of B.J.A., 18, of Summersville, South Carolina,
floating near the river bank about a mile-and-a-half downstream of the Sinks
in the Little River Gorge around 10:30 p.m. on April 19th. B.J.A. had been
bushwhacking along the Little River with two companions that day when he
decided to jump in and swim across the flood-level water. His companions
tried to discourage him, but were unable to do so. B.J.A. immediately had
difficulty staying afloat and was quickly swept downstream. His companions
reported the incident to a passing motorist. Rangers and county river rescue
and ambulance personnel had to employ a high line to recover the body. The
operation was not completed until 4 a.m. the next morning. District ranger
Kenny Slay was the incident commander. While the search and recovery effort
were underway, rangers were also searching for two separate parties of Boy
Scouts who were presumed to be cut off by flood waters. One group of ten
scouts was finally located around 10 a.m. on April 20th, the second group of
two scouts was brought to safety later that day. All were okay. [Jason
Houck, CR, GRSM, 4/21]

98-148 - National Capital Parks East (DC) - Sexual Assault Arrest

On April 15th, Park Police investigators and Fairfax County police arrested
Darryl Bess near his residence in Centerville, Virginia, in conjunction with
a sexual assault which had occurred two days previously in Kenilworth Park.
Bess is awaiting extradition proceedings to bring him back to the District of
Columbia to face charges. [Bill Lynch, RLES, NCRO, 4/17]
