INCIDENTS

98-167 - Hawaii Volcanoes NP (HI) - Follow-up on Search in Progress

The search for S.-D.T., 26, of Laupahoehoe was terminated yesterday
due to the lack of any clues as to his whereabouts. It is presumed that he
died and that his body washed out to sea. S.-D.T. reportedly climbed over
the western edge of a cinder cone, lost his footing, and slipped and fell 25
feet onto a lava bench (a shelf of new land created where the lava enters the
sea). Operations yesterday included extensive searches of eleven miles of
park coastline from Apua Point to Kamokuna. [Yvette Ruan, CR, HAVO, 4/30]

98-174 - Capitol Reef NP (UT) - Flooding

The Fremont River, which passes through the center of the park, began to rise
substantially from spring run-off on Friday, April 24th. Rangers accordingly
began to prepare hundreds of campers in the Fruita campground, adjacent to
the river, for the possibility of an evacuation. The evacuation did not take
place, but rangers continued to monitor the river throughout the night.
Additional staff were called in around 4 a.m. on April 25th as the river
began to undercut one lane of Utah Highway 24. The river also consumed about
30 feet of tree- and brush-covered riverbank at another location during the
night. Temporary road closures occurred as state highway crews and the
park's roads and trails crew completed emergency repairs at four locations
adjacent to the river - an effort that took about eight hours. Debris piles
from a major rockfall last May served as a rock quarry. The initial
nighttime response was hampered by radio repeater system failure. The system
came back on line about 9 a.m. as solar panels recharged the repeater
batteries. Bob Kreiling and Garry Olson were IC's during the 29-hour
incident. [Tom Cox, CR, CARE, 4/27]

98-175 - Chickamauga/Chattanooga NMP (TN/GA) - MVA with Fatality

On the afternoon of April 28th, the driver of a 1973 Datsun pickup failed to
negotiate a curve between two one-lane bridges on the Alexander's Bridge
Road. The truck rolled down an embankment and came to rest on its side. The
operator, S.B., 44, was partially ejected from the truck and was
pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, D.B., was hospitalized with
multiple contusions. Preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol was a
contributing factor. District ranger Jim Staub is the lead investigator.

EXCHANGE

Boundary Signing - A portion of the boundary along the north rim of Black
Canyon of the Gunnison NM is being surveyed and posted this summer. There
are two private parcels with conservation easements within the park and
adjacent to the boundary being surveyed. Park staff would like to hear from
other parks that have signed boundaries which include private property. If
the private property owner does not allow public access, is it appropriate to
mix standard NPS boundary signs with no trespassing signs? If non-NPS signs
are used, does your park provide all the signing or does it partner with the
landowner? Please contact Dave Roberts (BLCA/CURE) via cc:Mail at NP-CURE,
or call him at 970-240-5432.
