INCIDENTS

98-164 - Chattahoochee River NRA (GA) - Follow-up: Search for Drowning Victim

On May 3rd, a construction worker spotted a body in the Chattahoochee River
below his work site on an I-75 bridge in Atlanta. Rangers recovered the body
from dense debris with the assistance of local agencies. The county medical
examiner confirmed that the victim was C.H., who had been missing
since April 23rd, when his kayak overturned in swift water in the park. The
body was recovered about two-and-a-half miles downriver from the scene of the
accident. [Gil Goodrich, CR, CHAT, 5/5]

98-165 - Glen Canyon NRA (UT/AZ) - Follow-up: Search for Drowning Victim

The body of W.K., 46, a Forest Service employee from Flagstaff,
was recovered from the San Juan Arm of Lake Powell on Sunday, May 3rd.
Search operations had been scaled back to daily overflights and shoreline
patrols prior to the discovery of the body by bass fishermen. The fishermen
stayed with the body until ranger Lisa Slobodzian and Dangling Rope
maintenance employees Ron Ames and Floyd Onesalt arrived on scene to make the
recovery. W.K.'s body was found about 300 yards from the point where he
was last seen by his companion, who was operating the boat at the time of the
accident. Injuries indicate that W.K. was hit in the head by the boat's
propeller and was probably killed instantly. CISD was provided for park
employees. [Tomie Lee, CR, GLCA, 5/5]

98-182 - Yellowstone NP (WY) - Bison Goring

On May 2nd, a 43-year-old woman was walking near a bison in the Old Faithful
area when the animal false-charged her at a distance of less than 30 feet.
The woman froze, then attempted to turn away as the bison struck her from the
rear, tossing her into the air. The bison continued to circle her while she
was lying on the ground. A quick-thinking visitor drove his vehicle between
the bison and the injured woman, permitting her to leave the area safely.
The woman suffered minor bruising and a slight horn laceration to her thigh
and was taken to the hospital. [Allison Robb, Assistant SDR, Old Faithful
Subdistrict, YELL, 5/5]

98-183 - Golden Gate NRA (CA) - Rescue; Attempted Suicide

Rangers received a report of a possible attempted suicide at Morse's Gulch
north of Stinson Beach on the evening of May 1st. Rangers Bob DelSecco, Matt
Martin and Norbert Ruhmke responded along with county and state units and
found a station wagon parked at the side of Highway 1 at the mouth of the
gulch. Inside the vehicle, neatly laid out on the dash, were a wallet,
address book, coins and a belt. A suicide note was found inserted in the
address book. A search was begun, and the man was found in a creekbed that
traverses the canyon about 45 minutes later. He was semi-conscious and
foaming at the mouth. He was revived, stabilized, then evacuated to a county
hospital. It was determined that he'd injected a mixture of cocaine,
methamphetamine and heroin, and that he'd also taken Vicodin, Qualafen,
Prozac and Dilantin orally. He was admitted to the hospital with a referral
to county mental health services. [Richard Danielson, Operations Supervisor,
GOGA, 5/5]

98-184 - Mount Rushmore NP (SD) - Rescue

A 51-year-old Rapid City man suffered a serious heart attack while high up on
Mount Rushmore on April 29th. The man, who was on an NPS-led tour as part of
a pre-bid meeting for prospective contractors looking at a security job,
became ill suddenly after completing a strenuous hike to a canyon just behind
the sculpted faces over 400 feet above the base of the mountain. Rangers
responded to a radio call for assistance and provided immediate treatment.
The Pennington County search and rescue team and local ambulance services
were called out to assist in the rescue, which involved over 20 people and
took about two-and-a-half hours due to the extremely steep and rocky terrain.
During the rescue, NPS and county SAR personnel employed techniques that were
learned by one member of each agency at the recent servicewide technical
rescue training conducted at Canyonlands NP and worked very well together.
The victim was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital, where he
underwent open chest surgery and was admitted to intensive care in critical
condition. By May 4th, his condition had been upgraded, and it now
appears that he will survive. Ranger Andy Fisher lead the eight-person NPS
team, which was comprised of staff from the ranger, interpretation, and
maintenance divisions. [Mike Pflaum, CR, MORU, 5/4]

98-185 - Baltimore-Washington Parkway (MD) - MVA with Tour Bus

The driver of a tour bus traveling south on the parkway near Powdermill Road
on May 4th lost control of the bus and crossed over into the northbound lane,
striking two vehicles. The four occupants of the two vehicles had to be
extricated and were then flown by Park Police and state police helicopters to
local hospitals. All are currently listed in critical condition. Four of
the 18 passengers on the bus were also transported by ambulance. The cause
of the accident is still under investigation. [Henry Berberich, RLES, NCRO,
5/5]

98-186 - Gateway NRA (NJ/NY) - Special Event

The Bike New York Great Five-Boro Bike Tour, which was held on May 3rd, ended
at the park's Fort Wadsworth site. Over 25,000 cyclists began the tour in
Manhattan and covered 42 miles before entering the festival site at the fort
over a five-hour period. Rangers, Park Police officers and Bike New York
marshals provided crowd and traffic control. Vehicle access to the site was
restricted; visitors were allowed to walk in or take advantage of a shuttle
running from an outside parking area to the visitor center. The activity
took place under the conditions of a special use permit. There were no
serious incidents. [Marty O'Toole, Site Manager, Fort Wadsworth, GATE, 5/4]
