INCIDENTS

98-341 - Denali NP&P (AK) - Tour Bus Fire

A concessioner-operated tour bus with 48 visitors on board caught fire at
mile 16 on the park road on July 2nd. Park fire units, including a FIREPRO
helicopter, responded; mutual aid was also provided by the neighboring
community of Healy. All the passengers were safely evacuated, but the bus
was a total loss. The fire, which originated in the engine compartment, was
suppressed and kept from spreading into the adjacent brush and tundra. [Tom
Habecker, DR, North District, DENA, 7/5]

98-342 - Organ Pipe Cactus NM (AZ) - Van MVA with Multiple Injuries

A Border Patrol van returning 13 undocumented aliens to Mexico suffered a
tire blowout while passing through the park on July 3rd. The driver lost
control and went off the road; the van rolled at least once. Ranger/EMT Fred
Moosman was the first on scene. He began triage of the victims, provided
emergency field care, and summoned additional help. Moosman was joined by
several off-duty paramedics who also witnessed the accident. Injuries varied
from minor abrasions to life-threatening head, chest and abdominal injuries.
The park's structural firefighting crew and engine responded along with
numerous local and state police, fire and EMS units. Seven air evacuation
helicopters airlifted the injured to hospitals. The remainder were
transported by ambulances to local clinics. [Aniceto Olais, CR, ORPI, 7/3]

98-343 - Suitland Parkway (MD) - MVA with Fatality

The driver of a Honda heading northbound on Forestville Road on June 25th ran
a red light at the intersection with the parkway and was struck broadside by
a Ford Tempo. The driver of the Honda was killed, but the operator of the
Tempo was uninjured because his vehicle's air bag deployed. [Henry
Berberich, RLES, NCRO, 6/26]

98-344 - Rock Creek Park (DC) - MVA with Fatality

On June 24th, Park Police officers received a report of a partially submerged
vehicle with someone trapped inside in Rock Creek. Two officers entered the
creek and removed the male driver's body. It appears that the driver went
off the road the previous night during a storm. [Henry Berberich, RLES,
NCRO, 6/25]

98-345 - Baltimore Washington Parkway (MD) - Pursuit; MVA with Fatality

On June 24th, Park Police officers pursued a stolen car from the parkway into
adjacent streets in Prince George's County, but subsequently terminated the
chase. A search of the area was conducted and officers found that the car
had struck a tree. An 18-year-old occupant was killed; one of the three
other people in the car was injured and taken to the county hospital. A
joint investigation is underway. [Henry Berberich, RLES, NCRO, 6/25]

CURRENT SITUATION

Favorable weather conditions allowed firefighters to make progress on some of
the large fires in Florida yesterday. Large fire activity increased in
Texas. Containment objectives were achieved on most large fires in the
eastern Great Basin. Little initial attack activity was reported in most
other areas.

Very high and extreme fire indices were reported in Florida, Georgia, Texas,
Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Utah, California and Nevada.

No fire weather watches or warnings have been posted for today.
