INCIDENTS

98-387 - Canyon de Chelly NM (AZ) - Assault on Visitor

On the afternoon of Monday, July 13th, rangers and Navajo tribal police
responded to a report of an assault on a visitor at Antelope House overlook.
S.H. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and her daughter, Sara, had remained with
their vehicle in the parking lot while her husband and son hiked down to the
overlook. She was approached by two young Navajo men who asked them for a
ride. One of them then struck her in the face and asked for money.
S.H. began screaming; both assailants backed off, but threatened to shoot
them. They then ran off into trees surrounding the lot. A search was begun
and one of the two men was found hiding in a private residence north of the
overlook area and arrested. A female juvenile was also arrested for
obstruction because she initially told officers that no one was in the house.
The male was identified as C.A., 17, of Chinle, Arizona. He was
also wanted on a federal warrant for a murder indictment in Phoenix. The
second suspect has not been apprehended. S.H. was not seriously injured.
[Anna Marie Fender, Superintendent, CACH, 7/14]

98-388 - Great Smoky Mountains NP (TN/NC) - Rescue

S.S., 25, of Concord, Tennessee, was swimming at the Sinks on the
afternoon of Sunday, July 12th, when he went to the aid of another swimmer in
distress. While doing so, he slid down a waterfall and jammed his foot and
ankle between two boulders. S.S. was trapped at the base of the falls in
water nearly four feet deep. Rangers and rescuers from local fire and rescue
organizations worked for over five hours to free S.S. from the 55 degree
water. Plywood was used to shield him from spray and constant splashing and
to divert some of the flow. Intravenous fluids and pain medication were
administered and he was finally freed around 7:30 p.m. S.S. was flown to
University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville, where he was treated for
hypothermia and possible broken bones in his foot or ankle. [Jason Houck,
CR, GRSM, 7/13]

98-389 - Lassen Volcanic NP (CA) - Resource Violations and Arrests

On the evening of July 10th, the ranger at Butte Lake heard gunfire coming
from the south end of the lake. He went to the area the next day and located
a well-concealed campsite in close proximity to the site of last year's
Huffer fire. Nearby were about 300 morel mushrooms drying on a tarp.
Rangers conducted surveillance of the camp and subsequently contacted and
arrested Y.C., M.C., and T.V., all from Bend, Oregon.
Seized were about 4,000 morel mushrooms, weapons, and a small quantity of a
controlled substance. During the investigation, rangers determined that
T.V. had been querying NICC reports to determine the location of large
wildland or prescribed fires. Mushroom pickers target these areas, as the
morel mushroom can be found in large quantities during the first growing
season after a fire. All three are scheduled to appear in court on July
21st. [CRO, LAVO, 7/14]

98-390 - Yosemite NP (CA) - MVA with Fatality

A group from the British Royal Air Force was travelling on the Tioga road on
July 6th when the driver ran off the road and struck two large trees. The
driver and four occupants were seriously injured and were flown to trauma
centers in Modesto. The remaining passenger, K.T., a British
citizen, was declared dead at the scene. The accident is under investigation
by the park's criminal investigations unit. [Jeff Sullivan, Supervisory CI,
YOSE, 7/14]
