INCIDENTS

97-353 - Saguaro NP (AZ) - Follow-up on Homicide

On August 7th, homicide detectives arrested A.W., 21, of Tucson,
for the murder of Rachel Boryczewski. Ranger Andy Brinkley found
Boryczewski's body in a pullout near the visitor center in the Tucson
Mountain District on July 18, 1997. Detectives received a break in the case
when a man arrested on an unrelated charge told them that he'd loaned his
weapon to A.W. at the time of the murder. Ballistics tests confirmed that
the weapon was used in the slaying. A.W. is being held in jail without
bail on suspicion of first degree murder. Additional arrests may be made.

98-488 - Little River Canyon NP (AL) - Follow-up on Kidnapping and Rape

On August 7th, D.D., 31, of Collinsville, Alabama, told rangers
that she'd been abducted at knife point from a local convenience store during
the previous night, then driven to the park, beaten, and repeatedly raped.
She identified her attacker as an ex-boyfriend. Ranger Matt Huelskamp
investigated and interviewed D.D. along with local detectives and FBI
agents. On August 11th, they again interviewed her to clear up
inconsistencies in her report. During the interview, she was presented with
DNA evidence which contradicted her initial report and she admitted to having
made up the entire story. She said that she was trying to locate her ex-
boyfriend for child support and was trying to cover up her activities that
evening from her husband. D.D. also provided investigators with
information on a crack cocaine operation in the area. She is being charged
locally with making a false report and is expected to serve time in jail.

98-493 - Glen Canyon NRA (AZ/UT) - Rescue

M.H., 23, of South Jordan, Utah, was digging in a large sand cave
in the back of Moki Canyon on August 10th when the sand collapsed and buried
him. Nearby boaters and members of a Boy Scout troop dug him out after about
20 minutes. Two California firemen and a trauma nurse camping nearby began
CPR on M.H., who appeared lifeless, while transporting him on a private
vessel. Rangers Steve Luckesen, Leanne Apple and Phil Akers met the boat en
route, began advanced life support, resuscitated M.H., and got him on a
medevac helicopter. He was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center, where he's
listed in critical condition. [David Sandbakken, LES, GLCA, 8/12]

98-494 - Glen Canyon NRA (AZ/UT) - Rescue

While the above incident was underway on August 10th, a 13-year-old girl
nearly drowned in Kane Wash. Family members recovered her from seven feet of
water, began CPR, and were able to get a pulse. Rangers Lisa Slobodzian,
Nate Card and Mark Henderson responded and began advanced life support while
transporting her to Wahweap and Page Hospital. She was then flown to
University Medical Center in Las Vegas, where she remains in critical
condition. [David Sandbakken, LES, GLCA, 8/12]

98-495 - Shenandoah NP (VA) - Rescue

On August 9th, M.R. of Berryville, Virginia, fell 30 feet from a
boulder near Lower White Oak Falls and landed in the water. He sustained a
fractured femur and possible hip injury. M.R. remained in the water until
rescuers arrived two and a half hours later. Park medic Janice Pauley
provided medical care; members of the park's technical rescue team were among
the 20 rescuers who carried him out in a semi-technical evacuation to the
trailhead. Eagle One, the USPP helicopter, flew M.R. to the University of
Virginia Hospital. Ranger Liz Yee was the incident commander. [Clay Jordan,
DR, Central District, SHEN, 8/11]

98-496 - Blue Ridge Parkway (VA/NC) - MVA with Fatality

J.H., 57, of Zion, Illinois, was traveling southbound on the parkway on
the afternoon of August 11th; as he passed an entrance to an overlook, he
suddenly veered right as though he intended to enter the lot. J.H.'s
motorcycle struck the asphalt curb surrounding an island separating the
overlook from the highway and he was thrown from the bike as it flipped end
over end. Although initially conscious, J.H.'s condition later deteriorated.
He suffered cardiac arrest while aboard a medical helicopter en route to an
Asheville hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival. Ranger Don Coleman
investigated. [CRO, BLRI, 8/12]

Golden Age Passport Theft Investigation - On August 7th, the Morning Report
contained a request that parks check the numbers of several Golden Age
Passports that ATF had recently seized during the execution of a search
warrant to determine if they'd been issued in their areas. Special agent
Paul Ducasse has since determined that all of them belonged to the Forest
Service. Several USFS areas in southern California were burglarized
recently, and the passports were taken during the break-ins. Thanks to all
of you who took the time to search your records. Paul received a number of
timely responses from the field.
