INCIDENTS

98-526 - Southeast Region - Hurricane Bonnie

As of 10 a.m. this morning, the National Hurricane Center was predicting that
the center of Hurricane Bonnie would most likely come ashore somewhere along
the North Carolina coast between Wilmington and Cape Hatteras, but cautioned
that the storm's size will cause high winds and rain over a much larger area.
All areas from South Carolina to New Jersey have accordingly been warned to
expect hurricane force winds within the next 36 hours. Reports from the two
parks which will most likely be directly affected have been received; since
they came in, however, mandatory evacuations have been ordered for most of
the Outer Banks:

o Cape Lookout NS (NC) - The park's hurricane plan was put into effect
this morning and the staff began the process of buttoning things up.
The park has been closed to visitors and all services have been shut
down. All passenger ferry services to the islands were terminated this
morning, but concessioners continue to carry vehicles and passengers to
the mainland. The park's staff is presently clearing the park of
visitors and securing buildings and equipment. The park should be
completely shut down by 4:30 p.m.

o Cape Hatteras NS (NC) - The park began hurricane preparations and
instituted ICS at 6 a.m. yesterday morning. The objectives through
this morning included securing heavy and non-essential equipment,
securing government housing, closing selected areas, and disseminating
      information to the public.

Reports on preparations and/or impacts are solicited from all parks affected
by Hurricane Bonnie. They will appear in tomorrow's Morning Report. [Laurie
Heupel and Jim Zahradka, CALO; Bob Woody, CAHA, 8/24-25]
