INCIDENTS

98-660 - Gateway NRA (NY/NJ) - Homicide

On the evening of October 10th, Park Police officers were notified of an
assault that had occurred at Gateway Golf and Tennis in Brooklyn. They found
that J.M. had been shot four times while getting out of his 1988
Jaguar XJ6. J.M. was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced
dead. The case is being jointly investigated by Park Police and New York
City detectives. [Lt. John Lauro, USPP/GATE, 10/11]

98-661 - Glacier NP (MT) - Search and Rescue

Three hikers were found cold but alive early on the morning of Sunday,
October 11th, after spending an unplanned night in winter conditions on the
west face of Reynolds Mountain. K.S., 18, K.B., 18,
and R.B., 13, departed from the Logan Pass visitor center parking
lot around noon on Saturday for a hike to Hidden Lake. They decided to turn
back about half way to their destination due to heavy fog. On their way
back, they took a cross-country route with the intent of intersecting with
the trail above them, but became disoriented and eventually got lost in the
fog. They stopped just before dark, built a fire, and spent the night in the
protection of a small cluster of trees. Snow began to fall around 2 a.m. and
continued to fall until rangers found them at about 9 a.m. on Sunday. All
three were cold and hungry when found, but in good condition and able to walk
out on their own. [Charlie Logan, PR, GLAC, 10/12]

98-662 - Shenandoah NP (VA) - Body Found

Two park visitors found human remains near the junction of the Keyser Run
fire road and Little Devils Stairs trail around noon on October 11th and
reported their discovery to the park via cellular phone. Responding rangers
found the body of a man, probably in his late 20s, lying on the ground with a
firearm nearby. Although he has been tentatively identified, his name is
being withheld pending notification of the family. The incident is being
investigated as a homicide, but the strong possibility of suicide is also
being investigated. [Greg Stiles, ACR, SHEN, 10/11]
