INCIDENTS

99-28 - Cape Lookout NS (NC) - Search in Progress

On the morning of January 30th, the Coast Guard received a report of an
overturned vessel just outside of Beauford Inlet, which is on the park's
southwest boundary at Shackleford Banks. Small craft warnings were in place
at the time. Coast Guard crews responded and found an overturned 14-foot,
fiberglass, flat-bottom skiff; there was nobody on board or nearby, but a
life jacket was found in the water. A search was begun for the three people
on board. Ranger Christopher Stechmann searched Back Sound and the park's
inland waterways by boat and the nine miles of beach, dunes and woods on
Shackleford Banks by ATV. He found no signs of the three men in the 84-
square-mile search area. Rangers are continuing the land search of the beach
as part of their routine patrols. [Jim Zahradka, SPR, CALO, 2/2]

99-29 - Guadalupe Mountains NP (TX)/Carlsbad Caverns NP (NM) - Special Event

Secretary Babbitt visited the park and adjacent BLM lands in southern New
Mexico from January 27th to the 29th. He spent the night at the Ship on the
Desert Research Center in the park, hiked the Smith Springs trail, and joined
park employees for breakfast and an open forum, during which he discussed
expansion of the park's wilderness, air quality and boundary development
concerns. He then traveled to Carlsbad Caverns NP, where he spent two days
focusing on boundary concerns, cave protection and wilderness issues in the
park and on adjacent BLM and state lands. This was the secretary's first
visit to these parks. [Larry Henderson, Superintendent, GUMO, 2/1]

99-30 - George Washington Memorial Parkway (VA) - Sexual Assault

On January 23rd, a 16-year-old girl was picked up by a cab in front of Union
Station. The operator, a man between 28 and 35 years old, drove her around
the city for several hours, then took her to the parking area at the Columbia
Island Marina and sexually assaulted her. He was armed with a handgun at the
time of the offense. The case is being investigated by Park Police criminal
investigators. [Henry Berberich, RLES, NCSO, 2/1]
