INCIDENTS

99-34 - Grand Teton NP (WY) - Assist; Rescue

On January 28th, the Teton County sheriff's department asked the park's
technical rescue personnel for assistance in reaching and evacuating an
injured snowboarder. J.T., 30, sustained a femur fracture while cliff
jumping during an adventure photo shoot in a remote backcountry area south of
the park. J.T. was injured when he landed on a rock after a 50-foot jump
off a vertical cliff. Three rangers and their equipment were flown to the
site of the accident by the park's contract helicopter. Two rangers were
belayed down to the victim. Due to the seriousness of the injury, sub-zero
temperatures, the remoteness of the location, advancing nightfall and the
technical nature of the rescue, J.T. was evacuated by helicopter shorthaul
and delivered to a waiting ambulance. This interagency effort involved over
30 people. This was the second femur fracture sustained in this general area
in the past two weeks; each incident was associated with the filming of
extreme snowboarders/skiers jumping cliffs. J.T. underwent surgery for the
break and was treated for hypothermia and frostbite. He remains
hospitalized. [Colin Campbell, CR, GRTE, 2/5]
