INCIDENTS

99-41 - Great Sand Dunes NM (CO) - Vehicle Fire

Ranger/geologist Andrew Valdez was driving to the park's west boundary with
USGS water researchers on Wednesday, February 10th, when he came upon the
burned remains of a pumping rig. The rig was owned by Newmeyer Drilling, a
contractor that had just completed a series of deep wells and discovered a
new aquifer. Crews were to leave the truck in place to perform further
tests. Although arson was originally considered a possibility, it was later
learned that the truck had caught fire at 10 a.m. on Monday morning when a
drill crew was trying to move another vehicle through a sandy section of the
road. Crew members were unable to extinguish the fire, but did confine it to
one area. Some brush was also burned. The truck was a total loss. [Fred
