INCIDENTS

99-114 - Little River Canyon NRA (AL) - Search and Rescue

On April 1st, rangers received a report that a visitor had fallen into the
canyon. Ranges Matt Huelskamp and Dwight Dixon found that B.C.,
19, of Fort Payne, had fallen about 40 feet while trying to free-climb a 50-
foot bluff. He suffered lower back, hip and shoulder injuries. The multi-
agency rescue took about three hours. B.C. had hiked down into the
canyon earlier in the day. When it started to get dark, he tried to climb
out rather than take the trail he'd come in on; as he neared the top of the
bluff, he became tired and fell to the bottom. [Dwight Dixon, CR, LIRI, 4/3]

PARKS AND PEOPLE

Washington Office - Main Interior, which houses most NPS offices, and all
government buildings within a ten-block area around the White House will be
closed on Friday, April 23rd, due to ceremonies associated with the 50th
anniversary of NATO. Forty heads of state will be in town for three days of
activities. The closure has been mandated because of concerns over security
and traffic congestion.

Natchez Trace Parkway - The park has announced two GS-025-11 supervisory park
ranger openings. They close on April 23rd. One is located in the Kosciusko
District, about 50 miles north of Jackson, Mississippi; the other is located
in the Leipers Fork/Meriwether Lewis District, just south of Nashville,
Tennessee. Further information may be obtained from Ron Anderson, the park's
personnel officer, at 601-680-4012, or from chief ranger Mike Anderson, who
