INCIDENTS

99-197 - Denali NP (AK) - Rescue

On May 19th, F.T., 38, suffered injuries to his right shoulder and leg
when he fell about 60 feet on the West Rib of Mount McKinley. At the time of
the accident, F.T. was photographing his partner, M.R., 35, who was
descending on skis near the mountain's 14,200-foot level. Climbers M.B.,
28, and J.R., 21, reported the accident by cell phone and
greatly assisted in stabilizing and preparing F.T. for evacuation. Due to
the steep terrain, the non-ambulatory F.T. was secured in a "screamer suit"
and short-hauled to a waiting aircraft at the Kahiltna base camp. F.T.
blamed the accident on a broken crampon. F.T. and M.R. are both Italian
nationals. [Ken Kehrer, CR, DENA, 5/20]

99-198 - New River Gorge NR (WV) - Rescue

On Sunday, May 16th, H.K., 52, fell about seven feet while climbing
in the park's Endless Wall area, fracturing his ankle. An interagency rescue
followed which involved a 60-foot vertical raise to the top of the cliff and
a half-mile carryout by litter to a waiting ambulance. H.K. was treated
at a local hospital and released. [Rick Brown, Protection Operations Leader,
5/18]

99-199 - Lake Mead NRA (NV/AZ) - Disorderly Conduct

About 250 kids from UCLA's water skiing club gathered in the Katherine area
over the May 15th weekend. They broke two windows and 17 chairs in the
motel, broke into a room, and trashed the entire motel area. Many attempted
to buy alcohol though underage, and berated concession employees who asked
for identification. Rangers made them pour out their beer, then found the
same people drinking beer again two or three minutes later. Their boats were
grossly overloaded. Citations were written to many members of the group, who
complained that they were being singled out for persecution. [Bud Inman,
LAME, 5/20]

99-200 - Lake Mead NRA (NV/AZ) - MVA with Fatality

Rangers responded to an accident on the Katherine Access Road at Stopsign
Cove at 8:30 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, May 13th. A vehicle driven by
J.H. left the right side of the road, hit an embankment, and went
down a 35% slope. J.H. was pinned behind the steering wheel and under the
pedals; Joshua Baxter, an adult of unknown age, was lying outside and below
the vehicle; J.J., 9, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was lying in
the back seat. Chains were attached to the vehicle while rescue efforts were
undertaken to prevent it from rolling onto Baxter, who was lying downhill.
J.J. had symptoms of severe brain damage. He was flown to a hospital in
Las Vegas and remained in the ICU until pronounced dead on the evening of May
19th. J.H. was found to have a blood alcohol level of .147%. Negligent
manslaughter charges are being filed against him. [Bud Inman, LAME, 5/20]

99-201 - Natchez Trace parkway (MS/AL/TN) - MVA with Fatality

G.B., 31, of Collinwood, Tennessee, was killed in an accident on
the parkway on May 19th. G.B.'s vehicle collided with a log truck that
went through an intersection after its brakes reportedly failed. G.B. hit
the truck broadside; his vehicle slid under the trailer and pierced the
truck's fuel tank, causing a fire. The driver and passersby were able to
pull G.B. from his vehicle before it ignited, but he had already died from
injuries sustained in the initial impact. The investigation continues. [Tim
Francis, ACR, NATR, 5/20]

99-202 - Santa Monica Mountains NRA (CA) - Special Event

Over 5,500 people attended the annual Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest on May
16th. Although vendors at the event are allowed to serve beer, incidents
involving intoxicated visitors have been rare. This year, there were only
three such instances, one involving a person with outstanding DUI warrants
against him. There were no significant medical incidents. Ranger Jim Culver
was IC. [Greg Jackson, DR, SAMO, 5/16]

99-203 - Natchez Trace Parkway (MS/AL/TN) - Suicide

On May 19th, W.L., 41, died in the park of a self-inflicted gunshot
wound. W.L. left a note at his residence, which was found by his son, who
eventually ended up at the scene during the investigation. [Tim Francis,
ACR, NATR, 5/20]

99-204 - San Juan NHS (PR) - Body Found

The body of a young man was found among rocks at the ocean's edge at the fort
at San Felipe del Morro on the afternoon of May 15th. During the recovery
effort, high tides took it out to sea. Coast Guard and commonwealth police
maritime units made the recovery. There were two bullet wounds in the man's
chest. The victim has not yet been identified. It's believed that the
killing was drug-related. The investigation continues. [Glen Dodson, CR,
SAJU, 5/19]

PARKS AND PEOPLE

Santa Monica Mountains NRA - Ranger Glen Douglas is featured on the cover of
the latest issue of the CMC rescue products catalog, which is now arriving at
ranger stations across the country. A number of rangers have already called
the park to ask if it's him on the cover. Douglas, a GS-9 permanent at the
park, is in rescue gear rather than a uniform on the CMC cover. He acts and
models on his days off with the knowledge and consent of the park, but does
not appear as a government employee, ranger, spokesman or representative of
the agency in any of his appearances. Douglas has appeared on television's
Sunset Beach and Days of Our Lives, and is reportedly the only ranger on
staff with an agent...
