INCIDENTS

Amistad National Recreation Area (TX)
Two Significant Drug Seizures

Two joint drug operations this week have resulted in more major drug seizures in the park. On March 9th, Border Patrol agents saw a pickup truck towing a boat that looked like one that rangers had advised them had been used in smuggling on the lake. A dog searched the boat and found 189 packages with 698 pound of processed marijuana concealed under the boat's floor. The drivers of the truck and a rental "scout" vehicle were arrested; the pickup and boat were seized. This case is one in an ongoing investigation into large-scale smuggling by boat across Lake Amistad. On March 11th, Border Patrol agents interdicted a load of 268 pounds of marijuana that had been smuggled across the Rio Grande River and was being carried through the park by backpackers. A search continues for the smugglers, who fled on foot.
