INCIDENTS

Servicewide News
Follow-up on Operation Liberty Shield

The Type 1 team charged with coordinating the NPS response to the higher level of security brought about by the national response to increased threats of terrorism continues its work. Over the past two days, the team:

  • Made significant progress in implementing plans to provide personal protective equipment, medical screening, testing and training to personnel who may have to deal with weapons of mass destruction.
  • Staged SET teams at key locations and put communications plans into place.
  • Continued setting up a new incident command post at Shenandoah NP.
  • Continued to monitor intelligence concerning non-specific and specific threats to parks.

There were no significant incidents in the parks pertaining to either the war in Iraq or terrorism threats.

Park Fire Situation

Amistad NRA — The Ceniza Fire was 95% contained at the time of the report. Access to the fire, burning in river cane, willow and tamarack, has been difficult, and downstream flare-ups have hampered containment efforts. The acreage has been revised from 330 acres to 121 acres.
