Servicewide News
Follow-up on Operation Liberty Shield

JD Swed's Type 1 team has succeeded Skip Brooks' team and is continuing their work, particularly regarding preparing rangers for possible response to weapons of mass destruction. Current actions include:

  • Purchasing, distribution and training on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE purchased to date is ready for issue to all NPS special events teams and to staff in icon parks. The equipment is currently being packed and shipped out.
  • Development and distribution of training materials and the drafting of an interagency agreement for fit-testing gas masks are nearing completion.
  • Over the weekend, special events teams from Pacific West and Intermountain regions received PPE and completed required training on how to respond to chemical or biological terrorist attacks.

Questions about equipment acquisition and training may be called in to operations at 540-999-3174.

OPERATIONAL NOTES

Servicewide News
Google Search Feature and Individual Privacy

On April 3rd, Department of Treasury's IG for Tax Administration issued the following advisory, entitled "Security Risk Implications of Google Search Feature." Although the IG's focus was on security, this feature of Google also has implications for individual privacy. The text follows:

Currently, Google.com has an option available that may pose a security risk for federal employees.

If a person types his/her telephone number in Google's search bar and clicks the search button, it will provide the address of the phone number entered and the option of pulling up MapQuest directions and a map to the location of the phone number. This means that anyone who obtains a person's home telephone number, i.e. through the phone book or Caller ID, can find out exactly - and immediately - where that person lives.

There is a process, however, that will allow a person to get the link to his/her telephone number removed. This process is as follows:

1) Access Google.com

2) Type in your full telephone number in the following format: 555-123-4567 in
the "Enter keywords here" block, and then click on "Google Search".

3) If your number appears in the mapping database, an icon resembling a
telephone will appear to the left of the entry on the results page.

4) Click on this icon and it will take you to a page containing a description of this
service and a link to request that your number be removed.

5) Follow instructions provided.

6) If you have multiple phone numbers, be sure to check the others also.
