INCIDENTS

Denali National Park & Preserve (AK)
Significant Power Outages, Closures Averted

A major power failure affected numerous buildings in the park headquarters area for 48 hours beginning on Wednesday, May 21st. It occurred as inspectors were testing the condition of the lines. Park crews scrambled to install temporary lines to bypass the failed sections so that facilities and services at headquarters remained available to support activities during the park's intense visitor season. Over the past four months, 15 percent of the underground electrical distribution system at Denali has failed. Inspections on the failed sections, which are 35 years old, have revealed that the electrical insulation has deteriorated significantly. The contractors hired to inspect and test the system have determined that the problem is systemic and predict that the distribution system will fail completely in the near future unless the power lines are replaced.

Piscataway Park (MD)
Serious Damage to Historic Structure

An 18-wheeler left the road in Piscataway Park around 2:30 a.m. on January 12th and slammed into the wall of Marshall Hall, causing extensive damage to what remained of the structure (most of the original plantation house burned in 1981 in what was suspected to be arson). The driver, found by a county deputy, exhibited delusional behavior, telling the officer that God had made him wreck the hall and that "giants" were in the area. The driver was admitted to a local medical center, where he was questioned by USPP detective Todd Reid. He was released a few days later. Reid and NPS architect Susan Long conducted an ARPA investigation, estimating the loss at $2,875,260. Reid then tracked the driver, P.M., to Florida, where he was arrested on a federal warrant for these charges on April 7th. U.S marshals returned him to Maryland to stand trial for the felony offense. Marshall Hall was built in 1730 by Thomas Marshall, a justice of the peace in Prince George's County.

Natchez Trace Parkway (AL,MS,TN)
Assault with Deadly Weapon

On the afternoon of May 17th, ranger Barbara Mauller received a report of a male kneeling next to the roadway in the Tupelo District. The man, in his early 20's, was attempting to wave down passing motorists. Mauller and ranger Kim Korthuis found that the man had suffered several gunshot wounds. He was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center by ambulance. The preliminary investigation indicates that he was involved in a dispute at his house in an adjacent community when he was shot. Following the dispute, the man was taken to the parkway and dumped there. Verona PD is leasing the investigation.

Natchez Trace Parkway (AL,MS,TN)
Sexual Assault

A woman traveling down the parkway got out of her vehicle for a brief stop in the Ridgeland District on May 19th. An unidentified man accosted and sexually assaulted her. The FBI is leading the investigation; Ridgeland District rangers are assisting.
