INCIDENTS

Minidoka Internment National Monument (ID)
Special Event: Pilgrimage to Internment Camp

The first pilgrimage to Minidoka occurred over the last weekend in June and was very well received. There were several highlights, including an evening of remembrances; tours at Minidoka Internment National Monument; a presentation by the internationally recognized artist Roger Shimomura; a color guard ceremony in which the names of the 73 individuals from Minidoka who were killed in military service in WWII were read; and a keynote luncheon by Dan Sakura, who was the White House staff person who came to Idaho in January, 2001, and drafted the proclamation that lead to the NPS designation. About 120 former internees and their family attended, with some 400 individuals visiting the site over the two days. The event was a partnership effort among the Japanese American Citizens League, Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center, Halvise organization, Friends of Minidoka, and the National Park Service.
