INCIDENTS

Gulf Islands National Seashore (FL,MS)
Barges Ground on Horn Island

On Friday, October 31st, a Cenac Towing Company tug boat and two barges with a total of 45,945 barrels of crude oil on board grounded in sand 400 yards north of Horn Island. No oil was spilled, as the barges have double hulls. The pilot at the helm when the grounding occurred said that he and his crew were attempting to escape rough seas at the time. The oil is being transferred to other barges. The Coast Guard and NPS are investigating this incident and monitoring the oil transfer. An assessment of resource damage is underway.

Mojave National Preserve (CA)
Hunter Injured in Accidental Shooting

N.B. was hunting with a group of six friends and family members in the Woods Mountain area on the morning of October 18th when he was accidentally shot by a companion. The hunters were walking through desert vegetation, spaced about 100 feet apart and in a line. N.B. got ahead of the line; when one of the hunters shot at a quail, he accidentally struck N.B. with a shotgun blast. N.B. sustained injuries from approximately 35 to 50 pellets in his left arm, neck, chest and eye. He was flown by medevac helicopter to Las Vegas for treatment. None of his injuries were found to be life-threatening.

Antietam National Battlefield (MD)
Arrest of Armed and Dangerous Man

On October 28th, rangers received a "be on the lookout" message from the Maryland State Police for E.D., a 37-year-old man who was wanted in connection with the theft of a handgun and a violation of a restraining order. The message also said that E.D. had last been seen driving a Dodge Caravan, that he was armed, and that he had reportedly made statements that he would harm any officers who tried to approach him. Later that afternoon, rangers Linc Beers and Tom Jones saw the van in the parking lot of a convenience store adjacent to the park and notified state police. E.D. drove off while the rangers were awaiting the troopers' arrival, so they followed the van. The vehicle was stopped by state police officers several miles further down the Sharpsburg Pike. Beers and Jones assisted with E.D.'s arrest.
