Glacier National Park
Charlie Logan Retires

After more than 34 years with the National Park Service, West Lakes District Ranger Charlie Logan retired from the NPS on November 30th 2003.  Always a leader in the search and rescue field, Charlie was also known for his cooperation and community efforts in areas adjacent to his workstation. He exemplified the 'traditional ranger' with a broad range of skills, superb interactions with people, and a 'can do' attitude.

Charlie worked few seasons with the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado and developed his love of SAR while working in Rocky Mountain National Park, starting there seasonally in 1969. After taking a permanent job at Rocky in 1976, he accepted the Walton Subdistrict Ranger position in Glacier in 1985. While there he was a leader in the remote Essex community outside the park, guiding them with development of a medical response unit.

In 1992 he was promoted to the West Lakes District Ranger position in West Glacier, where he quickly became a trusted community leader. Charlie received numerous awards throughout his career including the Intermountain Region Harry Yount Award recognizing his diverse field based talents.

During retirement he will continue to enjoy skiing and hiking around northwest Montana, where he and his wife Sharon have a home just outside the park.

If you ever encountered Charlie, you will likely have kind words or fun stories to share. Email items to gary_moses@nps.gov, or mail them to Glacier National Park, Box 128, West Glacier, MT 59936 ATTN: Gary Moses, and the items will be forwarded to Charlie. A small celebration will be held at the park in January.
