INCIDENTS

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (AZ,UT)
Rescue of Boy Seriously Injured in Fall

On January 17th, a county deputy asked rangers to provide medical and technical rescue assistance to reach and extricate a 12-year-old boy who had been injured in a fall in a canyon near the community of Ticaboo, about a dozen miles north of Bullfrog. The boy had slipped on slickrock and bounced and fallen over 100 feet, sustaining a fracture of the femur of one leg and the tibia/fibular of the other. He ended up on a steep and hazardous slope near the edge of another cliff. Rangers and flight medics from Classic Lifeguard packaged the boy and utilized a low-angle belay to evacuate him to a point accessible by helicopter. The entire operation took about three hours; assisting were members of the Ticabo and Off Shore Marina VFD's, the Classic flight crew, and state officers. Ranger Greg Kouns directed the SAR operation, assisted by rangers Jason Bauwens and Kerry Haut.

National Capital Parks-Central (DC)
Weapons and Child Endangerment Arrests

Park Police detective Todd Reid and officer John Cox were en route to Franklin Park to work a prostitution detail on the evening of January 21st when they were passed at high speed by a gold Cadillac. They attempted to pull it over, but the driver declined to stop until forced to do so by highway congestion. While Cox detained the driver, Reid pursued the passenger, who fled on foot. The chase went on for several blocks, cutting through a number of small NPS-administered parks along Massachusetts Avenue. At one point, the man Reid was chasing fell down, and a dark-colored handgun fell to the sidewalk. He regained his footing, but was eventually captured after a fight with Reid. Park Police officer Ricardo Zamora, who had responded as backup, found the gun — a loaded .38 caliber revolver. Reid also found a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol in the man's pants pocket, with three rounds in the magazine and a fourth in the chamber. Meanwhile, Cox had arrested the driver and detained a second adult, who had been in the back seat with a one-year-old child who was not in a safety seat. The second adult was charged with child endangerment. Two spent .45 caliber casings were found on the floor of the Cadillac. Investigators are talking with a witness who reported that the weapon had been fired from the car before the officers arrived.
