INCIDENTS

Virgin Islands National Park (VI)
Illegal Immigrants From Haiti Flooding Park

Rangers and local officers arrested 20 undocumented aliens from Haiti on Wednesday, February 25th. Rangers transported them to Immigrants and Customs Enforcement in St. Thomas. Due to the volatile situation in Haiti, the park has been overwhelmed with illegal entry incidents. A typical boat landing involves about 30 to 50 illegal aliens. Since there are no Border Patrol officers in the U.S. Virgin Islands, border policing around the park has been left to rangers and island police.

Virgin Islands National Park (VI)
Rescue of Fishermen

On the evening of February 26th, the NOAA vessel Nancy Foster came upon a disabled 20-foot fishing boat with two people on board near a popular local fishing area about eight miles south of St. John. The park was asked to assist, and two rangers headed out to the area to retrieve the fishermen and tow their boat back to St. John through five to six-foot swells. The fishermen suffered from minor hypothermia, but were otherwise fine.
