INCIDENTS

National Capital Parks
Officer Revives Eight-Month-Old Baby

Park Police officer Charles Barner was on patrol in southeast Washington the morning of February 26th when two women ran out of a house and waved frantically at him. Barner stopped his cruiser and ran into the house with the women, one of whom was shouting that her baby had drowned. Barner found an eight-month-old baby lying on the bathroom floor, unconscious and not breathing. He began CPR, and the baby resumed breathing and showed signs of a pulse. City fire and EMS personnel arrived on scene shortly thereafter and took the baby to Children's Hospital, where it is recovering.

Amistad National Recreation Area (TX)
Drug Seizure

On February 16th, a park visitor driving along the back roads in the San Pedro area of the park noticed flagging by the shoreline of Lake Amistad. He investigated, found a tarp with two large bundles stacked beneath it, and contacted Val Verde County Sheriffs' Department to report the discovery. The two bundles contained a total of 115 pounds of processed marijuana.  No arrests have been made, nor are there any suspects at this time.

OPERATIONAL NOTES

NPS "Officer Down" Video Reissued

The NPS-produced video, "Officer Down: The Murder of a National Park Service Ranger," has been reissued in CD format. The 45-minute program depicts the circumstances on the day that Ranger Joe Kolodski was murdered near Big Witch Gap on Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina.

The video also discusses the findings of the board of review for the incident and some of its recommendations.

The program was originally distributed on video cassette to park superintendents. It is now available to chief rangers, firearms instructors, and defensive tactics Instructors to incorporate into in-service training.

Because it is in CD format as a Windows media file, it can be played on most NPS computers and integrated into PowerPoint programs.

Interested parties can request a disk from NPS-LETC by emailing Greg_Jackson@nps.gov.
