INCIDENTS

Redwood National and State Parks (CA)
Search and Rescue of Three Lost Hikers

Late on the evening of Thursday, March 4th, J.S. reported to rangers that his three companions — A."R.".Y., 18, J.M., 18, and D.S., 18 — had failed to return from a short off-trail hike looking for mushrooms within Redwood National Park.  Rangers conducted hasty searches of the immediate area and associated road networks throughout the night without success. A joint command with the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department was established the following morning and the search area was expaned. Searchers found J.M. and D.S. on an abandoned logging road within the search area around 11:30 a.m. Over the next two days, the search for A.Y. grew to include 40 people, nine search dogs and air support from the Coast Guard. The search was concentrated in the steep and difficult terrain of the Little Lost Man Creek and Lost Man Creek drainages. On the afternoon of March 7th, Yunis was found on another logging road in the search area. He'd spent 72 hours in the field without food and with only minimal clothing. He was transported by ambulance to Mad River Hospital in Arcata, where he was admitted to the ICU.[Submitted by Scott Wanek, Chief Ranger]

Two Arrested for Theft of Pickup Truck

Rangers Ed Appel, Mike Croll and Randy Fisher responded to a report of a possible stolen vehicle at the Dingman's Ferry post office on February 7th. Before arriving, the rangers formulated a plan to conduct a felony stop if the vehicle was indeed there. When they got to the post office, they found that the truck was still there and that two people were inside. During the felony car stop, the passenger got out of the pickup and fled on foot through the snow and across a road into a wooded area. Fisher pursued and was able to take him own at gunpoint. Croll assisted Fisher with handcuffing and walking the suspect back to a safe location near the patrol vehicles. Appel had been covering the driver at gunpoint during this time. Croll and Fisher were then able to place the driver into custody without further incident. [Submitted by Chris Kross, Supervisory Park Ranger]

Drug Seizure and Arrests

On February 25th, Border Patrol agents from the Comstock Station interdicted 332 pounds of processed marijuana and arrested four smugglers near the town of Langtry, Texas. Three others were able to elude capture by fleeing across the river into Mexico. The smugglers transported the drugs through the park and into the United States by utilizing a rubber raft to float the drugs across the Rio Grande River and were arrested as they were attempting to hike the load up a canyon that intersected with Highway 90. The incident is under further investigation by DHS - Immigration and Customs Enforcement. [Submitted by Chief Rangers Office]
