INCIDENTS

Cape Hatteras National Seashore (NC)
Wildlife Poaching and Vandalism

On Saturday, March 27th, rangers found the remains of two eastern white-tailed deer near Bodie Island lighthouse. The deer, which were intact, had been killed by small caliber bullets to their heads. The comfort station windows and a handicapped parking sign had also been shot up, and .22 caliber casings were found in the area. On March 30th, two more dead deer were found on the Oregon Inlet beach a couple of miles from the lighthouse. Both were again intact, with small caliber wounds in their heads. Rangers and state resource officers set up a decoy deer operation on Friday, April 2nd. Just after 9 p.m. that evening, J.P. and W.M., both 18, were arrested for twice shooting at the decoy deer with a .22 caliber rifle. They both waived their Miranda rights and admitted to killing the four deer and to the vandalism to the comfort station and sign. Intake ranger Miranda Cook worked the surveillance operation with the state officers; rangers Chuck Huston, Jason King and Paul Stevens also assisted.
