NIFC Situation Report — Thursday, April 15, 2004

Preparedness Level 1

Initial attack was light nationally on Wednesday, with 89 new fires reported. Two new large fires were reported and contained, one each in the East and the Northern Rockies.

Very high to extreme fire indices were reported in Georgia and Wisconsin.

Law Enforcement and Emergency Services
2004 Police Week Events

The events of police week this year will take place from May 12th to May 15th. This year the NPS will memorialize two fallen officers from years past — U.S. Park Police officer William J. Grissam, who was killed on March 20, 1932 by a hit and run driver while on bicycle patrol in Washington, D.C., and park ranger Duane P. McClure, who drowned on May 22, 1980 during a solo canoe patrol in Yellowstone.

The following activities are being planned to commemorate McClure and Grissam in addition to the other NPS rangers and officers who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty:

The uniform of the day for these solemn ceremonies will be the full winter service uniform. Duty belts are optional for off-duty officers and rangers who are in travel status.

NPS Office at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
Photos of Rangers Sought

The NPS Law Enforcement Training Center is developing a recruitment brochure for commissioned park rangers and is in dire need of contemporary high-quality photos of commissioned personnel performing the many duties of their positions, including law enforcement, EMS, wildland and structural firefighting, SAR, public contact, contact with school groups, boat patrol, ski patrol — the whole spectrum. Your assistance is solicited.

Rights to the photos must belong to the NPS, or be granted to the NPS, and the photos must be of top quality. Digital photos can be sent to Greg_Jackson@nps.gov. For prints and slides, please send an email before sending the photos.
