INCIDENTS

Cape Hatteras National Seashore (NC)
Two Killed, One Injured in Jeep Accident on Beach

Dare County emergency communications received a 911 call around 3:30 a.m.on Sunday, May 23rd, reporting a rollover accident at Coquina Beach. Rangers Jon Anglin, Paul Stevens and Chuck Huston responded along with Dare County EMS, Dare County Sheriff's Office deputies, NC Highway Patrol officers and Nags Head Fire and Rescue personnel.  A witness statement and the associated investigation revealed that J.G., 19, of Glen Allen, Virginia had driven a cloth-topped Jeep at a high rate of speed — later estimated at 50 to 55 mph — into an area closed to vehicles. The Jeep hit an 18-inch berm, went airborne for about 70 feet, hit the ground, and rolled end over end four times before coming to rest 200 feet from the berm. N.G., 22, of Richmond, Virginia, the rear seat passenger, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.  S.B., 23, also of Richmond, Virginia was extricated from the vehicle and died during a Dare County Medflight transport to a Virginia trauma center.  J.G. was also thrown from the Jeep; he was flown by Dare County Medflight to a Virginia trauma center, where it is expected he will be released in the next several days.  Alcohol was a contributing factor and charges are pending.

Fort Necessity National Battlefield (PA)
Severe Thunderstorm Batters Park

On Friday, May 21st, an intense thunderstorm passed over Friendship Hill, Fort Necessity and the surrounding area, saturating already wet soils. At 6:40 a.m., a microburst hit the parks, snapping and uprooting trees. Although none of the park's structures were damaged, more than two dozen trees fell across roads at Fort Necessity and another four blocked roads at Friendship Hill. Parts of both parks were without power throughout the day, including the half of the headquarters building that supplied power to the computer server and copy machine. Although all visitor access roads were reopened by late in the day, work continued throughout the weekend to fully clear roadways and begin clearing trails. Power was not completely restored until sometime Saturday.[Submitted by Ken Mabery, Superintendent]

Fire and Aviation Management
NPS Fire Management and Eastern National Announce New Website

Eastern National and the National Park Service Fire Management Program are proud to announce the launch of a new Fire Education website, www.eFire.org.

This website represents an educational partnership between the National Park Service Fire Management Program and Eastern National, a cooperating association partnered with the National Park Service. The main goal of the site is to create a centralized destination for fire education materials and resources. The website provides links where families, educators, fire professionals and community groups can learn more about fire education. The site also provides links to real-time fire news and other fire management organizations throughout the U.S.

Internet users can access the website directly at http://www.eFire.org or they can find hyperlinks from Eastern National's website, http://www.eParks.com or the National Park Service Fire Management website, http://www.nps.gov/fire.

The retail function for eFire.org will be provided by Eastern National's commerce website, eParks.com, which offers a wide-variety of America's national parks educational materials including books, videos, posters, games, collectables, and more.

eFire.org provides links to three separate fire education bookstores on eParks.com:

  • Fire Education, Structural
  • Fire Education, Wildland
  • Fire Leadership.

"We are happy to be working with the National Park Service Fire Management Program and look forward to making fire-related educational products available to the public," said Chesley Moroz, President of Eastern National.

Eastern National is a non-profit organization that provides quality educational products and services to America's national parks and other public trusts. Eastern National operates educational outlets in over 130 national parks and public lands in 30 states. Since 1947, Eastern National has donated over $70.7 million to the National Park Service.
