INCIDENTS

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (MI)
Sentencing for Assault on Rangers

On July 27, 2003, a woman later identified as N.E., 45, of Traverse City, Michigan, arrived at D.H. Day Campground demanding a campsite. When told that the campground was full, N.E. began acting irrationally. She saw a 16-year-old boy at the campground office and asked him if she could share his campsite, then followed him to the site. Ranger Patrick Schad responded. N.E.'s antics had by that time drawn a crowd at the campground. She immediately confronted Schad, yelling obscenities at him as she attempted to engage the crowd in her defense. N.E. also attempted to use her large dog as a barrier. Rangers Nate Mazurek, Dianne Johnson, and Chris Johnson also responded. They isolated N.E. and her dog from the crowd, then took her into custody — but not before she'd taken a swing at one ranger and kicked the others in the chest and legs. She also managed to urinate on Schad; in the ensuing struggle, all the rangers were exposed to N.E.'s body fluids. During booking, N.E. revealed she was positive for hepatitis C, so the rangers underwent precautionary testing for HIV and hepatitis B and C. N.E. was issued several violation notices and later indicted on three counts of simple assault on a federal officers. She pled guilty to all three counts. On May 11th, N.E. appeared before a federal magistrate and was sentenced to six months imprisonment, with credit for time served; fined $75 for court costs; and ordered to pay $1,009 in restitution to the park for the damage she inflicted on a park law enforcement vehicle.

PARKS AND PEOPLE

United States Park Police
Officer Stephanie Clark Selected as Reserve Airman of the Year

Congratulations to US Park Police officer Stephanie Clark (Rock Creek Sub-Station) who won Outstanding Airman of the Year for the Air Force Reserves. She will now go on to the Air Force competition, where she will compete against active duty and guardsmen.

Clark, a private with the Park Police, was recently named the Air Force Reserve Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year. She was mobilized on March 10, 2003, with the 88 APS out of McGuire AFB.. She spent the next year at various assignments including Charleston AFB and Dover AFB.

On July 4, 2003, she began an almost six month tour of duty in Baghdad, where she was the NCOIC (non-commissioned officer in charge) of air logistics at the Coalition Provisional Authority in the Republican Palace.

Clark coordinated all aspects of airlift for the CPA to include the leadership of the Coalition and of the Iraqi Governing Council. She handled many missions supporting Iraq's infrastructure with much-needed funds and equipment.

Clark also coordinated the transportation of the new Iraqi army and the Iraqi police to various sites for their training by US and Coalition forces. Most notable of the missions was a 32-person humanitarian mission to send 16 ambulatory Iraqi children and their guardians to receive medical care not available in Iraqi.
