NIFC Situation Report Highlights — Tuesday, July 6, 2004

Preparedness Level 3

Initial attack was light nationally on Monday, with 225 new fires reported. All were caught by initial attack.

Very high to extreme fire indices were reported in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Utah.

Yukon - Charley Rivers National Preserve (AK)
Deer Creek Fire -- ref #236, A4WX (Wildland Fire)

Fire is located on the southern boundary of the park on BLM land. It is believe the fire has burn into the park. This fire also is threatening the Community of Eagle, AK. (full report)
Crews and dozers made significant progress on protection lines around the city of Eagle and Eagle Native Village. Dozer/sawline along American Creek is completed. Hose lay and sprinklers along the line should be completed today. This fire was active on 7/3. Two out structures were lost to the fire. Poor visibility prevented additional mapping for acreage changes.
Acreage: 63,270 acres
Resources Committed: Smokejumpers, helicopters, Gary Cone's Fire Use Team is managing the Eagle Complex of which this fire is a part.

Yukon - Charley Rivers National Preserve (AK)
Edwards Creek -ref#234, A4WG (Wildland Fire)

This fire ignited on BLM land north of the preserve. It since has grown significantly and burned into Yukon-Charley Rivers NPr. (full report)
Six of the eight smokejumpers were to be transferred to the Woodchopper Creek Fire by boat for cabin protection. The remaining two smokejumpers will protect the cabin when the aerial burn out occurs (no estimated date for that event yet).
Acreage: Total acreage 43,600 acres. 7,800 (estimate) acres in the preserve.

Several thousand lightning strikes have occurred in the central and northern portions of Alaska June 13,14,15th and ignited this and many other wildland fires. (full report)

Fire was discovered at 3 acres. Fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain. (full report)
Six smokejumpers are providing cabin protection for the Coal Creek area. Some rain was received at Coal Creek overnight.

GS-023-12 Outdoor Recreation Planner

Dates: 07/01/2004 - 07/16/2004

The Pacific West Regional RTCA (Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance) Branch in Oakland.CA has an upcoming vacancy that they would like to fill through a lateral reassignment.  The incumbent of this position serves as the primary NPS staff representative for the California Hydropower Program of the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Branch.  Works closely with appropriate federal, state, and local agencies, conservation organizations, project applicants and the public in development of conditions and agreements for hydropower licensing and re-licensing efforts to enhance public outdoor recreation opportunities and promote conservation of natural and cultural resources.  Reviews and assists in preparation of hydropower project applications, scoping documents, study proposals and reports, environmental impact statements and assessments, plans and related documents.  Assists in the generation of relevant data including flow studies, recreation needs assessments and carrying capacity studies.  Maintains communication and effective relationships with federal, state, and local officials and organizations to identify priority projects, develop strategies and resolve conflicts and controversies.  Prepares formal and informal correspondence and briefing materials as needed.  Represents the National Park Service at regional, statewide and national meetings, conferences and workshops.  Coordinates with other agency personnel to develop policy positions and documents and to assist the implementation of Hydropower Program initiatives and activities.  Provides primary staff support for the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System in California.  Assists communities and conservation organizations on projects to conserve and enhance river, trail and open space resources and participates in Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program management and administration activities as assigned.

Duty Station: Management preference is to duty station the position in the Pacific West Regional Office in Oakland, CA with the Partnerships Program in the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Branch.   An alternate duty station in Sacramento, CA may be considered under certain circumstances.
