South Florida Areas

Hurricane Wilma Recovery Operations Wind Down

Denny Ziemann's Pacific West IMT, which was overseeing activities at Biscayne NP and Big Cypress NP, will be closing out with those two parks today. Team members will be heading home on Wednesday.

Everglades NP/Dry Tortugas NP

Everglades National Park reopened on Sunday, November 20th, after Tropical Storm Gamma's projected path shifted to the south overnight. Portions of the park still remain inaccessible to the public, though, as recovery efforts continue.

Dry Tortugas National Park reopened on Monday, November 21st. Remaining incident personnel on the islands returned to Everglades over the weekend and are demobilizing.

The transfer of command plan was prepared on Sunday.

TRAINING

Little River Canyon NP

Tactical Pistol Course

The park will sponsor a tactical pistol training course at the Fort Payne Police Department range in Fort Payne, Alabama, on December 3rd and 4th. Tuition will be $300. This is the most comprehensive two-day handgun class in the world. This tactical pistol course prepares you to prevail in a real world violent confrontation. The course addresses the critical information and esoteric skills required to employ a revolver or semi-auto pistol under extreme stress, and provides a thorough grounding in the knowledge required to use your gun to best advantage.

Topics include role and attributes of the handgun, legal aspects of deadly force, anatomical theory of stopping power, post-modern pistol technique (high speed combat marksmanship and non-diagnostic gun handling), tactical fundamentals, mental conditioning for combat, movement and communication, structure clearing principles, and low light firing with and without supplemental illumination. Live fire drills include both one- and two-handed shooting, using both eye level and retention techniques at a variety of ranges and from a variety of tactical body positions. For more information contact Jimmy Dunn at jimmy_dunn@nps.gov. Rocky Mountain NP

GS-11 District Interpreter (Lateral Reassignment)

Are you looking for a lateral reassignment to great job, in a great place, at a great park (Rocky Mountain National Park) as a supervisory GS-025-11 interpreter? If you are, and if you are eligible for, and interested in, a lateral reassignment, please click on “More Information” below for details on the job and location and for instructions as to how to apply. Rocky Mountain National Park will soon have a vacant GS-025-11 district interpreter position, located in the Colorado River District on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park near Grand Lake. This is a supervisory position that reports directly to the chief of interpretation and education. Due to the geographic separation from park headquarters in Estes Park, we're looking for an interpreter with experience at the full performance level who can work independently and, in essence, “hit the ground running.” [Rebecca Snavley, Human Resources Officer]
