Agate Fossil Beds NM/Hubbell Trading Post NHS

Guilty Plea Filed In Thefts From Two Parks

In August, 2007, M.G., 51, and his brother G.G., 45, were indicted in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado for transporting items stolen from Hubbell Trading Post in Arizona and Agate Fossil Beds in Nebraska to the state of Colorado. They were also charged with aiding, abetting, counseling, inducing and procuring each other's participation in these offenses. The charges stemmed from thefts of Navajo rugs and other Native American artifacts from the two parks. In early January, G.G. pled guilty to the charges in federal court. He also pled guilty to possession of marijuana. M.G. faces up to ten years in prison on each federal count, but is expected to be sentenced to three years in prison, which will be served concurrently with the expected three-year sentence for the marijuana possession. The brothers were arrested last July. A search of G.G.'s residence in Crook, Colorado, led to the discovery of 28 marijuana plants being grown by an artificial light in a bedroom. Federal, state and local agencies were involved in the investigation and the recovery of the stolen artifacts, including the National Park Service, the Nebraska State Patrol, the FBI, the United States Park Police, the Colorado Division of Wildlife, the Logan County Sheriff's Office, the Sioux County Sheriff's Office, the Omaha Police Department and the United States Attorney's Offices for the Districts of Colorado and Nebraska.
