INCIDENTS

Colonial NHP

Man Sentenced For Attempted Homicide

A 26-year-old ex-sailor will serve nine years in prison for his role in an attack on an acquaintance in the park in Yorktown last September. Lawyers for S.W. say he was high on a mixture of painkillers, amphetamines, cocaine and LSD during the attack. S.W. and two others admitted to stabbing Jonathan Barron, lighting him on fire, and using a meat marinade injector in an attempt to poison him with a mixture of Barbicide, a disinfectant used in salons, and silver thermal compound, an electronics adhesive. The circuit court judge sentenced S.W. to 60 years in prison, with all but nine years and five months suspended. The judge asked S.W. why they chose the silver thermal compound and Barbicide. S.W. said the liquid cocktail was selected for its vampire-killing properties. [Virginia-Pilot]

Yellowstone NP

Boy Injured By Yellowstone Bison

A 12-year-old Pennsylvania boy was flipped in the air by a bison near the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone last Friday morning. A mature bull bison, apparently annoyed at the close proximity of the boy, tossed him approximately 10 feet in the air. Witnesses said the boy was posing with members of his family within a foot or two of the animal despite repeated warnings from other visitors. The incident occurred just off the trail adjacent to the Uncle Tom's trail parking lot along South Rim Drive. The bull's horns did not puncture the boy. The only outward injuries he suffered were abrasions, possibly received from hitting the ground after the fall. Because the boy complained of abdominal pain, he was transported by ambulance to Lake Clinic, then flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. His current condition is not available. [Public Affairs]

Baltimore-Washington Parkway

Man Arrested For Assault On Officers

Late on the evening of June 20th, officer Brooke Robbins and sergeant Mark Schuette attempted to arrest a man for illegally bicycling on the parkway. When questioned whether or not he was armed, the man threw a loaded pistol into the woods. A struggle ensued in which the officers tried to subdue him unsuccessfully with OC spray. The man was able to get away and disappeared into a wooded area. Park Police officers were able to identify him as C.C., 37, of Bowie, Maryland, who had a prior record, and obtained a warrant for his arrest. They were able to contact C.C. by phone and got him to turn himself in. He has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. [Sergeant Robert Lachance, PAO0]
