Overturned Tanker Truck Spills Fuel In Park

The driver of a BP tanker carrying 3,800 gallons of diesel fuel lost control of his truck on Steels Corner Road on the afternoon of October 31st. The truck rolled over and landed on park property by the intersection of the Akron-Peninsula and Steels Corner Roads, coming to rest on its side with fuel spilling out. The driver sustained injuries of sufficient severity to warrant transport to Akron General Hospital. About 100 gallons of fuel spilled onto the ground before it was shut off. The truck was emptied and removed by private contractors. Ohio EPA was advised and arrived on scene to coordinate the cleanup, which was done by a private contractor. The park and Akron PD are conducting a joint investigation, with the latter leading the effort and the NPS assessing the cleanup efforts and working on cost recovery. [Chris Ryan, Chief Ranger]

Man Pleads Guilty To Pro-Nazi, Anti-Semitic Vandalism

On November 6th, R.B., Jr., pled guilty to two counts of vandalism and was sentenced to 17 days in jail (time served) and two years of supervised probation, to be followed by three years of unsupervised probation. As special conditions of probation, R.B, must participate in mental health counseling and must stay out of national parks in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia for the next five years, except when driving on commuter roads or traveling by metro. Between June 15, 2006, and August 9, 2006, R.B, repeatedly vandalized a construction site located along Memorial Avenue near Arlington Cemetery by writing pro-Nazi, anti-semitic terms. Also, on or about December 2, 2006, R.B, vandalized a portable toilet station at the Iwo Jima Memorial in the same manner. After an investigation, United States Park Police detective Kevin Fornshill identified R.B, as the vandal responsible for these incidents, with assistance from Arlington PD. The successful investigation and prosecution of R.B, has closed at least a dozen USPP investigations of vandalism on National Park Service property in the District of Columbia and in Arlington, Virginia.
