Rising Little Missouri River Causes Minor Park Flooding

Precipitation and runoff have caused the Little Missouri River to rise above flood state within the park. As of yesterday, the river was at 15.7 feet at the Medora gauge and dropping. Flood stage at the point is 15 feet. The crest on Sunday was just over 16.3 feet, a bit below the forecasted height of 17.2 feet. This is the highest level the river has reached at the Medora gauge in 31 years and will likely rank sixth on the overall list for highest crests. The peak flow was expected to hit the park's North Unit yesterday or possibly today. Damage with the park is limited. The water came over the bank at Cottonwood campground in the South Unit, causing some flooding, but a much larger area would have been flooded if the river had risen a foot higher. It appears that flood waters reached a point about two to three feet below the level of the Maltese Cross cabin. In the North Unit, portions of the Little Mo trail were underwater and it was accordingly closed. Fences near the river likely took another hit, as they did with last month's high water. Portions of Chimney Park in Medora were also flooded, as were several river bottom areas. [Tom Cox, Chief Ranger]
