PARKS AND PEOPLE

Southeast Region
Michael Byrd Named Regional Comptroller

Michael Andrew Byrd has joined the Southeast Regional Office as regional comptroller. He serves as the principal financial advisor for all parks, programs, and offices administered by the region, which stretches from the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico to Kentucky and North Carolina.

Michael develops, coordinates, and maintains an integrated system of financial services, including budgeting, accounting, auditing, and general fiscal management, with a goal of efficient use of both appropriated and non-appropriated sources.

A native of the eastern shore of Virginia, Michael attended Atlantic High School, then Hampton University for undergraduate studies.  The U.S. Army supported advanced studies, leading to an MBA from Syracuse University in comptrollership.  Previous work experience include budget officer, comptroller, and senior financial program manager with the Department of Defense while on active duty for 24 years, then as a DOD civilian and contractor. Michael brings a wealth of education and a wide range of expertise in the fields of budget and financial manager.

Michael and his wife, Gina, have one son, Carson, who is a rising senior at Hampton University, his father's alma mater. In addition to many other interests, Michael is an intercollegiate and high school basketball official for games in Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. Michael is the son of the late Willard R. Byrd and Mrs Maggie Byrd.

In addition to a distinguished military career, Michael has expanded his resume to include teaching physically and mentally challenged students.  A keen interest in history has drawn him to the National Park Service mission, particularly the stories interwoven into the southeastern U.S. places.  He is known for high work ethics, professionalism, and an innate ability to work with all different personalities and perspectives to resolve issues and develop creative solutions.  We are delighted to welcome him to our staff.
