Two Fishermen Drown In Long Pond

Two men - C.F. and R.W. - left the north boat launch on Long Pond for a day of fishing on Wednesday, April 17th, and were seen by other fisherman at 3:30 p.m. near Rum Island (the island is within the park and about half of the land mass around the lake is owned by the NPS). A 30-mile-per-hour wind was blowing that day, sufficient to form whitecaps on the 875-acre lake. A local resident noticed that their truck and trailer were still in the boat ramp parking lot that evening; they were still in the lot the next morning, so the same resident called Mount Desert Police Department. They began an investigation and the Mount Desert Fire Department launched a rescue skiff on the lake. The park and the Maine Warden Service were called in to assist. Firefighters found a capsized 14-foot skiff and a body floating in the water in the southeast end of the lake. Park staff and Maine wardens recovered R.W.'s body from the 45 degree water. The search for C.F. continued for two more days. Engaged in the search were divers, boats with side-scan sonar, Mount Desert Island SAR ground teams, Maine Search and Rescue Dogs teams, and police officers, firefighters and rangers. Divers found his body on April 20th. Neither of the fishermen was wearing a lifejacket, though the boat was equipped with them. [Stuart West, Chief Ranger]
