Visitor Dies In 150 Foot Fall

A visitor called 911 yesterday morning and reported that a 24-year-old man had fallen about 150 feet from The Narrows on the Keyhole Route on Longs Peak and suffered traumatic injuries.

An off-duty park volunteer with a radio descended to the man with his climbing party and began CPR, but he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

An effort was made to recover his body by helicopter yesterday afternoon but had to be postponed due to high winds. Efforts will again be made today.

Ice was present at several locations along the Keyhole Route at the time of the incident.

Rangers Respond To Two Separate Fatalities At Same Time

On August 9th, rangers in Sequoia National Park responded to two fatalities at the same time in different areas of the park.

Rescue teams searching for a missing 65-year-old hiker in the Mineral King area were attempting to reach a body that had been discovered by NPS contract helicopter when a call came in regarding a second incident.

A 54-year-old man from San Diego collapsed in the New Army Pass section of the park. A park medic was flown to the scene to provide advanced life support, but resuscitation efforts proved unsuccessful. A body recovery ensued.

Since daylight hours were limited, the body located in Mineral King was flown out by helicopter on August 10th and transferred to the Tulare County Coroner's Office. The body was later identified as that of a missing hiker from San Rafael.
