Rangers Assist In Search For Fleeing Felons

Late on the afternoon of Monday, March 9th, Del Norte County Sherriff's deputies became involved in the high speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle adjacent to the boundary of Redwood National and State Parks.

The chase continued for over 20 miles at speeds that exceeded 110 miles per hour, during which the passenger fired numerous shotgun rounds at pursuing vehicles. The vehicle eventually crashed into a ditch near the town of Smith River, and both driver and armed passenger fled on foot into the surrounding wooded area.

The sheriff sought assistance from all available law enforcement agencies, and rangers arrived on scene within a minute of the vehicle crashing. Two K9 teams and a California Highway Patrol helicopter participated in the search for the suspects.

Rangers assisted in the apprehension of the driver, who surrendered without incident, and provided additional support in the search for the passenger. The search was called off due to darkness and safety concerns. As of this time, the passenger is still at large.
