MOUNT RAINIER NATURE NEWS NOTES
Vol. II May 1st, 1925 No. 20

ANIMAL NOTES

Henry Fuhrer, winter keeper at Paradise Inn, reports that with upwards of 20 feet of snow on the level, the bear was out in Paradise Valley by April 7th. This was about three weeks earlier than they appeared last year and three weeks later than they were out about Longmire Springs. At present two black bears and one brown one pay daily visits to the hotel.

Chipmunks are out again at Longmire, this time to stay no doubt, and brown spots are beginning to appear on the snowshoe rabbits. Twice during the month rabbits similar to the snowshoe but entirely brown have been reported. Whether these are individuals that for some reason have failed to moult or whether they are the Washington Hare of the coast country we have not yet learned. The Washington Hare has never been known to inhabit the Park.
