GLACIAL RECESSION OF THE NISQUALLY
for the year ending September 30, 1929.
On October 1st., as has been the custom for several years, the annual
check on the recession of the Nisqually Glacier was made and it was
found that this glacier -- third largest on Mt. Rainier, and
consequently in the United States, had melted back 52 feet from its
position on the same date of the previous year. This figure is 37 feet
less than the recession recorded for the year ending Sept. 30, 1928. The
extreme recession recorded during that year was probably due to the fact
that the snout of the Nisqually was confined in a narrow gorge during
that period. Having retreated to a point back of this gorge the volumn
of face ice was greater and, while the amount of melting was probably
little, if any, less this melting did not show up in the recession
figures as was the case of the year previous. Since 1918 these annual
tabulations have been made. It has receeded 748 feet since that
time.
