WITH THE CCC CAMPS Improvement is being effected in maintaining files and records in the various CCC camps of Alabama. To assist Project Superintendents in their administrative work, Inspector Robert F. Wirsching has made arrangements with the Army to conduct a clerical school for enrollees. Two members from each camp will be assigned to the school at SP-16, Monte Sano State Park, Huntsville. The course of instruction includes typing, bookkeeping and the preparation of reports. * * * One of the most active organizations at MASS. SP-16, Mount Tom State Reservation, Holyoke, is a Drum and Bugle Corps formed by enrollees more than two years ago. Beginning with borrowed drums and bugles, the corps has grown steadily, acquired its own instruments and now participates in holiday parades and other programs. Among other laurels, the first prize for out-of-state corps was won by the Mount Tom organization in an annual competition held in Thompsonville, Conn. * * * CCC workers of Ohio SP-6, Sand Run Reservation, Fairlawn, began last month with the construction of a large new play area and combination building at Virginia Kendall State Park. The site will be known as "Happy Days Camp" and will accommodate underprivileged children of Akron. The new building will consist primarily of dormitory space to provide for 88 sleepers, a mess hall, a kitchen and quarters for supervisors and attendants. The facilities will permit children who participate in school playground activities to spend a day and night in the out-of-doors. * * * Enrollee Dolphus Ford, of TVA P-15, Harrison Bay State Park, Harrison, Tenn., is under observation by Rogers Hornsby, manager of the Chattanooga Lookouts, a baseball club of the Southern Association. Hornsby complimented lord on his throwing arm (he is a pitcher) and invited him to work out with the team when it is in town. He also suggested the enrollee make the training trip to Hot Springs during the fall. * * * The first section of a river drive has been completed by workers at MASS. SP-24, Robinson State Park, Feeding Hills. The .6-mile link, marked by careful vista selections, long radius curves and easy grades, provides an excellent scenic parkway which follows the winding Westfield River. |
