In many respects these pages are a joint contribution from the several members of the Geological Survey whose recent studies, both published and unpublished, in the Great Basin region have provided much of the basic information here presented. I am greatly indebted to them for many enlightening discussions, as well as for the use of numerous unpublished data, and have refrained from designating some of them as co-authors only because some of my conclusions have not been uniformly accepted.
