Stehekin Valley Road. Known to some as the "road to nowhere," the valley road wends up the Stehekin Valley from the shores of Lake Chelan, c. 1963. (Courtesy of the North Cascades National Park)

Lake Chelan. At the Twenty-Five Mile Creek dock, the Lady of the Lake approaches on its way to Stehekin, c. 1963. Travel by boat was the only way to reach the isolated community of Stehekin, except by foot, horse, or airplane.

Thunder Creek Valley. Steep-sided valleys, a signature of the North Cascades were attractive for their scenic quality as well as their potential for hydroelectric power production. (Courtesy of the North Cascades National Park)

Ross Lake. With limited access, the lower end of Ross Lake provides opportunities for fishing and solitude, c. 1963. (Courtesy of the North Cascades National Park)

Ross Lake. The only road into Ross Lake comes from Canada to the north. At a trailer camp near Hozomeen, the park complex's "northern outpost," visitors can launch power boats, fish, or enjoy the area's remote setting. (Courtesy of the North Cascades National Park)
