OBJECTS OF WOOD
PRAYER STICKS. Fragments of a half dozen
prayer sticks were found in two different graves. It was not determined
of what kind of wood they were made. They were all in the neighborhood
of 1/4 of an inch in diameter. One group was painted blue over their
whole lengths. The other was painted green. No evidence of carving or
of attachment of any other object to them was apparent on the fragments.
None was complete in length. All measured less than three inches.
BOW. A small bow was found buried with a
young child on the west slope. Rather miraculously preserved, it was
almost intact from one end to the other. Its length was 2 feet, 8-1/2
inches and greatest width 1-1/2 inches, tapering to 3/8 of an inch at
then ends. There were no notches for the attachment of the bow-string at
tho ends. It was 3/8 of an inch thick.
The fragment of an arrow-reed arrowshaft, four
inches long, was also found in the grave.
